Parent Conference Day – Students will not attend school on Wednesday, January, 27th so that parents will have an opportunity to meet with teachers. Teachers will be available from 7:30-11:30 to meet with parents. Please respect the time assignments. Teachers will have accreditation meetings during the remainder of the day.

 2010-2011 SES Registration – Registration packets are being sent home with the oldest child in each family today.  Please continue to forward names of families interested in SES for the 2010-2011 school year so that we can make contact with them prior to registration.

Catholic Schools’ Week Mass – To mark the beginning of  Catholic Schools Week,  mass will be celebrated at 10:45 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church on Sunday, January 31. SES students are expected to attend mass in full school uniform.  Members of Sodality are required to attend wearing Sodality uniforms.  Our choir will consist of 4th graders and volunteers from other grades.  Students in grades PreK-2nd will have reserved seats near the choir and will be singing the closing song, “This Little Light of Mine”.   Please invite family and friends to attend.

Catholic Schools’ Week Diocesan Project - As a service project, all Catholic school students in the Diocese are being asked to make donations to benefit the less fortunate in our area.  St. Elizabeth School students are being asked to donate dish washing liquid, laundry detergent, or paper towels.  All items should be brought to school by Wednesday, February 3 to be packaged and presented by our 8th grade representatives at the Catholic Schools’ Mass at St. Thomas More on Friday, February 5. 

Beta News – T-shirt money is now past due.  All shirts must be paid for by tomorrow!  Beta Day is Saturday, January 30.

Winter Raffle – The deadline for submitting ticket stubs and money is Friday, February 5, 2010.  The drawing will be held on Friday, February 12 during the Mardi Gras Carnival. Families selling extra books of tickets will have their names entered into a drawing for a $100.00 gift card to WalMart, Game Stop, Bulid-a-Bear, Claire’s, Foot Locker, or a Prepaid Visa. In order to keep tuition affordable, we must make our fundraisers successful. Thanks, for your continued support of SES!

Help to Haiti – SES faculty and students donated $466. 05!!!  We will be sending this monetary donation through Friend Ships, an established missionary group from Louisiana that has been working in Haiti for some time. Social Studies Fair – Thanks to Ms. Angela and everyone else who helped!  Congratulations to all who participated. All 1st place winners will represent SES at the Nicholls Social Studies Fair.

Pee Wee Basketball Tournament-We apologize for the confusion in dates.  Permission slips, entry fee, and t-shirts are due on February 12.  Our annual Pee Wee Basketball tournament is scheduled for February 26, 2010. All students in 4th – 8th grades are invited to participate.

Calendars -  February and March calendars are being sent home today. 

Carnival-We are pleased to announce the 54th anniversary of our Carnival celebration at S.E.S.  In 1956, the St. Elizabeth School Mothers’ Club sponsored the first Carnival celebration and costume contest at S.E.S. and we have been enjoying it ever since.  Students in grades pre-K – 8th vote on a Royal Court of 8th graders who reign over the celebration.  Voting for the Court will take place on Thursday, February 11, 2010.  The rest of the students dress and compete in Mardi Gras costumes in 3 different categories:  Prettiest, Funniest, and Most Original.  They may compete as individuals or in groups.  They are all separated into 2 divisions with Pre-K-3rd competing against each other, and 4th-7th competing.  Admission for the event will be $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children.  This year’s Carnival will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 12th.  Please make plans to join us for an afternoon of great fun.

Students Absences – Please remember to call in to notify the office if your child is out sick.  Thank you for helping us to insure the safety of your children.

Scrip News - We are pleased to announce that Cane Row Cafe’ has been added to our list of local scrip merchants. Gift certificates will be available in $10, $25 and $50 increments with a 4% discount.

Drama Club Practice- The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade members of the cast will practice on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday until 3:15.  Please note that students who are are not picked up by 3:30 will be sent to after-care.

Drama Club News- Students in K, 1st, and 2nd grades are being invited to join the cast of “The Wizard of Oz”.  Permission slips were sent home today.

Thank You Parents – We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during the recent cold snap which required you to send lunches and provide transportation for your children in order for us to stay in session.  SES had two emergency days scheduled in the calendar and will not need to make up any days.  Please pray for good weather for the remainder of the year!

Recruitment Party – Thanks to Ms. Loretta, faculty, staff, student and parent volunteers, the day was a huge success!  Please continue to forward names of  families interested in SES for the 2010-2011 school year so that we can make contact with them prior to registration.

Report Cards – Report cards will be issued on Wednesday, January 13.   Please sign the report card jacket and return to school tomorrow.

Social Studies Fair – All application forms for the Social Studies Fair (Jan. 21st) are due by this Friday, Jan. 15th.  The form is the last page of the packet that went home before Thanksgiving.  Extra forms will be in the office.

Mission Collection -  Friday, January 15.

Recruitment Party Volunteers – Parents of SES 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students:   We need student volunteers for our Annual Recruitment Party this Saturday, January 16th, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  The students need to be at St. Elizabeth for 9:00 a.m. and picked up by 11:15 a.m. Letters will be going home with the students Wednesday, January 13th. Martin Luther King Day -  SES will be closed in observance of MLK Day on January 18.  Classes resume on Tuesday, January 19.

Book Covers – To continue to protect textbooks, you are asked to keep covers on books throughout the year.

Accelerated Reader - Congratulations to all students who qualified for the AR field trip! 

Accelerated Reader Reminders - To qualifiy for AR incentives, students must meet their point goal for the semester.  The semester goal is double the 9- week goal.  It does not matter which 9-week period the points are met, as long as the semester goal is met by the designated date. 

All students are expected to either read one book per week in the lower grades, or two novels or chapter book per 9-week period in the upper grades.  Their AR grade is based on the comprehension score.  However, in cases where students read and test on more than the required number of books, the comprehension score is based on the highest scores for the required number of books for the grade level.  Lower grades are required to read 8 books and upper grades 2 books.

Box Tops, Community Coffee Coupons - Thanks to everyone for saving the Box Tops and Community Coffee coupons.  We received a check today for the Box Tops in the amount of $535.50.  We are still collecting Community Coffee coupons until the second to last week in January.  Keep them coming.  Thanks!

St. Elizabeth will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 11, 2010 due to low water pressure in Assumption Parish. Unless otherwise notified, classes will resume on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.

School Closure Information

Parents, the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Baton Rouge follow the civil parishes in the event of weather related school closures. Superitendent Tibby Martinez will not make a determination about school closures until tomorrow morning. You will receive a message tomorrow morning in the event that school will be closed. However, we will not have cafeteria service tomorrow. Students will have to bring a lunch to school. We apologize for the inconvienence and will keep you informed as soon as we receive information from Assumption Parish.
